GABRIELLE NEW is the Artistic Director of The Space Between Performance Collective. She is a Butoh Dance Theatre Movement Artist, Physical Theatre performer, Director and Choreographer with an interest in healing, transformation and the intra-psychic landscapes of the human mind. She uses improvisation and imagery to create original movement scores, which allow audiences to enter a surreal dream-world.
She obtained a Certificate in Dance from The Northern Rivers Conservatorium in 1999. In the early 2000’s Gaby was a company member of LemiPonifasio’s MAU Dance Theatre (NZ). In 2005 she received a Certificate in 3D Art which she incorporates into her transforming design and costumes. In 2009 Gaby was a recipient of a solo residency through Victoria University where she also completed a Diploma of Theatre Arts in 2010. That year she was also a directing intern with Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre in Brisbane for six months. And is currently undertaking a Masters in Fine Art at RMIT.
In 2011 she produced and directed CREATURE– a shape shifting Journey into Butoh Wonderland at Theatre Works, and choreographed and performed in The Rock for Kurunpa Live Arts. In 2012 she performed a solo work EMERGENCE for the Dancehouse curated Melbourne Fringe show ‘Your Way. In 2013 she worked on a devised piece with director Helen Smith for The Space Between on a butoh investigation into the Buddhist TEN WORLDS performed at Dancehouse. She has been invited to perform in Poland with Atsushi Takenouchi and to teach and create a show in Vancouver Canada for Human Theatre collective called Those that dare not grasp the thorn should never crave the rose.
