Paula Van Beek
PAULA VAN BEEK is an artist dedicated to creating new performance works using collaborative processes. Paula attained a Bachelor of Arts from Victoria University, Wellington, NZ, and went on to found an independent company (Open Book 1998) and run a developmental theatre venue (BATS 2001 – 2004).
In 2006 Paula completed a Graduate Diploma in Animateuring at VCA, Melbourne and is now an active member of the Melbourne arts community. She has presented original performance projects in the Melbourne Festival (2006, 2007, 2008) Melbourne Fringe (2001, 2008, 2012) , Next Wave Festival (2010), Helium season at Malthouse (2012) and has made works in car parks, theatres, hallways, warehouses, on river banks and online.
With a particular focus on creating with light, Paula specialises in collaborating with dancers and contemporary performance makers. Paula is a key creative artist on the award winning dance work Opal Vapour (2012). As a freelance lighting designer she has worked with some of Australia and New Zealand’s leading choreographers and performance makers. She often works at VCA’s School of Performing Arts a creative collaborator as well as tutoring students in how to ‘think in light’.
Paula has collaborated with Gabrielle New and The Space Between Performance collective on Void (2009), Creature (2011) and Ten Worlds (20013).
She also teaches performance skills workshops for the VCA Foundation program and runs the solo self devising project for Verve Studios.
